Chetham’s School Library, Manchester

Chetham's School Library
This collection is thought to be the world’s first public reference library. The books were originally chained by
their spine, but could be lifted onto the central bench and opened. In the room just visible at the end of the
corridor, Marx and Engels met regularly, eventually producing the first draft of the Communist Manifesto.
